On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of southern Turkey and northwest Syria.

The death toll has surpassed 35,000 and continues to climb.  It is the worst earthquake to strike the region this century.

Southern Turkey and northern Syria are currently facing winter conditions with snow and sleet falling in affected areas and freezing temperatures projected in the days to come. Telecommunications are disrupted, exacerbating efforts to identify and account for families.  Transportation is also impaired at airports across southern Turkey.  Many hospitals in the region have been declared unusable.  Schools and public spaces have been officially closed across Turkey.

In Turkey, needs are growing. Caritas Internationalis, in coordination with local authorities, are gathering displaced people in safe and open spaces and trying to distribute hot meals and clothing.
