In almost any country you visit, you’ll find someone playing soccer. For many children who have been affected by the devastating disasters and conflicts in their country, the soccer field becomes a safe space of healing and allows them to be kids even in times of crisis. In vulnerable areas where families are hungry and drought prevents crops from growing, the soccer field is a place where children can play with abandon—at no cost—feeling the rush of a goal or a stolen pass.
Together, we will be watching the World Cup and cheering along with millions of other fans. Fútbol—or soccer as it’s known in America—is a favorite sport from Colombia to Kenya to Indonesia. Even in the throes of war, Ukraine will be playing in the tournament.
And while you might not have a deep passion for the sport, you do have compassion for families in need. As this event brings so many people together in spirit, let’s take a moment to come together in the spirit of goodwill.
